Safety assessment and behavioral effects of Solanum guaraniticum leaf extract in rats

Abstract: Solanum guaraniticum is a medicinal plant traditionally used to treat gastric and liver diseases. However, there is no documented evidence corroborating its safety. The present study evaluated the potential toxicity of S. guaraniticum leaf extract after acute administration in rats. Single doses of the extract (1.250, 2.500, and 5.000 mg/kg) were administered by gavage, and the rats were then monitored for 48 h and/or 14 days. Mortality, acute signs of toxicity, and general activity in the open field test were… Show more

“…Table 3 shows the relative weight of the targetted organs of rats treated with the extracts Relative organ weight does not vary significantly (P>0.05) between the different groups regardless of sex. Similar results were reported by Bonfanti et al [26] in rats treated with S. guaraniticum leaves extract. Aqueous extracts of S. aethiopicum leave don't induce organomegaly.…”

“…Treatment with the different doses increases the activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase as well as amount of thiol groups in serum and tissue, showing the antioxidant properties of the extract. Bonfanti et al [26] reported different results in rats treated with S. guaraniticum leaves exact at a doses of 1250, 2500 and 5000 mg/kg. The difference could be due to difference in dose or depends on the specie [43] .…”

“…A decreased activity of transaminases, PAL and γGT was also recorded regardless of gender. Bonfanti et al [26] equally showed a decrease in transaminase activity in rats treated with S. guaraniticum leaves extract. Transaminases are synthesized and are released in blood in case of cell damage or trauma.…”

“…A legislação vigente no Brasil determina que a segurança e aplicabilidade de moléculas candidatas a fitoterápicos sejam definidas antes da sua comercialização. A priori são realizados estudos in silico para o entendimento e descrição da interação das moléculas em veículos não biológicos (BONFANTI et al, 2016).…”
