Titrimetric and spectrophotometric assay of diethylcarbamazine citrate in formulations using iodate and iodide mixture as reagents

Abstract: One titrimetric and two spectrophotometric methods are proposed for the determination of diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC) in bulk drug and in formulations using potassium iodate and potassium iodide as reagent. The methods employ the well-known analytical reaction between iodate and iodide in the presence of acid. In titrimetry (method A), the drug was treated with a measured excess of thiosulfate in the presence of unmeasured excess of iodate-iodide mixture and after a standing time of 10 min, the surplus thi… Show more

“…The outcomes of the negative readouts are deducted from the actual detection results to obtain reliable detection outcomes. Nonetheless, in evaluating the assay, false positive signals leave an undesirable effect on the specificity and accuracy of the technique [96][97][98][99][100]. High porosity might also be a drawback in lateral flow-based systems due to the lack of control over diffusion of the reagents into the structure of the paper that, in turn, makes the consistency of the flow rate questionable [3].…”

“…Mebendazole (MB) (Figure 1A) which is official in both European [6] and united states pharmacopeias [7], chemically known as Methyl (5-benzoyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)carbamate [7] was introduced into the market in 1971. By surveying the literature, many analytical methods were found to determine the drug in pure, dosage forms and biological fluids including spectrophotometric methods [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] chromatographic methods [16][17][18] and volummetric titration method [19]. MB was also deter-mined electrochemically through three voltammetric methods, one of them was performed on Poly(3-methylthiophene)-modified glassy carbon electrode [20].…”

“…The amount of I 2 produced is then determined by a back titration using Na 2 S 2 O 3 as a reducing titrant. The iodometry titration can be used in the assay of many pharmaceutical compounds such as amoxicillin and diethylcarbamazine citrate [14, [37][38][39].…”
