Nitric oxide releasing-dendrimers: an overview

Abstract: Platforms able to storage, release or scavenge NO in a controlled and specific manner is interesting for biological applications. Among the possible matrices for these purposes, dendrimers are excellent candidates for that. These molecules have been used as drug delivery systems and exhibit interesting properties, like the possibility to perform chemical modifications on dendrimers surface, the capacity of storage high concentrations of compounds of interest in the same molecule and the ability to improve the … Show more

“…Several lines of evidence have demonstrated the defensive role of NO as a gastroprotective mediator against gastric ulceration through enhancement of mucosal blood flow, stimulation of gastric mucus secretion, and reduction of leukocytic cells' infiltration 5961. Notwithstanding, upregulation or downregulation of NO can cause deleterious gastric mucosal damage 62,63. The marked effectiveness of the medicated COS-NP s could be assigned to the activity of the drug and the polymer in normalizing the upregulated NO content in ulcerated gastric tissue 10,17…”

“…The most common dendrimer scaffold that is commercially available is prepared from polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers [ 152 ]. Dendrimers act as a platform for nitric oxide (NO) transport and delivery, but their application in agriculture is still not explored [ 153 , 154 ]. The usage of dendrimers is widespread, ranging from biology to material sciences [ 155 ].…”

“…[ 19 ] Due to the short half‐life of NO, NO donors such as S‐nitrosothiols (RSNOs), N‐diazeniumdiolates, organic nitrates, and metal nitrosyl complexes have been developed to allow controlled and localized NO release from biomaterials. [ 20–22 ] The endogenous RSNO S‐nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) is a bioavailable source of NO which has been detected in the body. [ 23 ] GSNO is innately biocompatible, contains spontaneous and tunable NO‐releasing potential, and has superior stability compared to other RSNOs.…”
