Evaluation of (anti)genotoxic activities of Phyllanthus niruri L. in rat bone marrow using the micronucleus test

Abstract: Phyllanthus niruri L. (Euphorbiaceae), known as "quebra-pedra" (Portuguese for "stonebreaker"), is an herb used for kidney disorders. In light of its frequent use by the population, the present study aimed to investigate the genotoxic, antigenotoxic and cytotoxic activities of a standardized P. niruri extract in bone marrow rats. Three groups of 12 animals were treated daily by gavage over a period of 30 days, with 50, 150 or 250 mg/kg of P. niruri extract aqueous solution. The control group (n = 12) received … Show more

“…The significant presence of micro nucleated cells, as observed herein with ready juices, classifies substances, compounds or solutions tested as mutagenic (Corcuera et al, 2015). This condition with the liquid preparations indicates that they should be evaluated in animal test systems, since, according to Queiroz, Matias, Cunha and Schwarz (2013), the occurrence of cell changes, though not considered a carcinogenicity measurement, are often associated with the appearance of cancer, as there is a positive correlation between increased mitotic spindle aberrations, as well as micro nucleated cells, and detection of neoplasms. Also, the frequency of cell changes observed in Table 2 confirms the results of reduced cell division in Table 1.…”

“…Thus, the data obtained with root meristem cells of A. cepa show that the dairy products evaluated have significant potential to cause toxicity at the cellular level. This result indicates that these foods must be soon assessed in bioassays, physiologically more complex, as in animals, since, according to Queiroz et al (2013), cellular changes, when expressively present, as evidenced in this study, when observed at a significant frequency in animal tissue, have great potential to promote tumors, once there is a positive correlation between the increased frequency of micronuclei and development of cancer in mammals.…”
