“…As stated in Passos et al (2012), the epidemiologic profile and risk factors for HCV in the population are of substantial importance for the establishment and evaluation of health policy programs. This work has the merit of being the first study to simultaneously establish the prevalence of hepatitis C in a high risk population (inmates) and in the non-prisoner population in the city of Colatina, ES, Brazil.…”

“…Mutation enables the virus to evade the immune system and the innate immunity of the host, leading to the development of chronic hepatitis C in most patients, as well as cirrhosis (20%) and hepatocellular carcinoma (1-4%) (Chen, Morgan, 2006). Worldwide, 27% of cases of cirrhosis and 25% of cases of hepatocellular carcinoma are attributable to the hepatitis C virus (Perz et al, 2006).As stated in Passos et al (2012), the epidemiologic profile and risk factors for HCV in the population are of substantial importance for the establishment and evaluation of health policy programs.
