Threats to and viability of the giant anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla (Pilosa: Myrmecophagidae), in a protected Cerrado remnant encroached by urban expansion in central Brazil

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Urbanization poses a serious threat to wildlife populations inhabiting native vegetation remnants surrounded by the expanding urban and suburban sprawl. The close contact with human activities causes not only direct impacts, such as habitat loss, but also indirect negative effects, such as population isolation, roadkills and anthropogenic fires. The Parque Nacional de Brasília is a large Cerrado remnant almost completely surrounded by the city of Brasília, in central Brazil. Here, we use population vi… Show more

“…This mammal is found in South and Central America (Superina et al 2010) and is endangered in São Paulo (Chiquito & Percequillo 2009), in all of Brazil , and even at an international level (Miranda et al 2014). Today, the giant anteater's population is decreasing and has been affected mostly due to habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, road kill, and wildfires (Silveira et al 1999;Koster 2008;Superina et al 2010;Diniz & Brito 2013;Freitas et al 2014). These factors, combined with low reproductive rates, long parental care, and low densities have enhanced the species' vulnerability (Rodrigues et al 2008).…”

“…According to Diniz & Brito (2013), roadkill could be more dangerous than fire and inbreeding for populations of Xenarthra. Therefore, we recommend that roadkill be considered a "major threat" to xenarthrans in conservation status assessments.…”

“…O crescimento populacional e a expansão das áreas urbanas também têm sido considerados como fontes de ameaça à conservação da biodiversidade em diferentes regiões do Cerrado como no entorno de Brasília/DF (Diniz & Brito, 2013) ou Palmas/ TO (Reis et al, 2012). Atualmente, mais de 85% da população brasileira vive nas cidades e à medida que as áreas urbanas crescem, aumenta a demanda por recursos externos (água, energia, alimentos).…”
