Postlarval development of Nicolea uspiana (Polychaeta: Terebellidae)

Abstract: The postlarval development of Nicolea uspiana (Nogueira, 2003), a small intertidal terebellid polychaete from rocky habitats on the southeastern and southern Brazilian coast, was studied based on postlarval, juvenile and adult specimens. The specimens, ranging from 8 to 43 segments, were collected between May 2006 and May 2007. The youngest postlarval specimen was found crawling outside of the tube. In specimens at different stages of growth, the number of ocelli and tentacles increased; the first pair of neph… Show more

“…However, this uncini arrangement is only evident in juveniles or adults, as there is only one row of chaetae in the first larval stages (Wilson 1928; Eckelbarger 1974; Bhaud and Grémare 1988; Bhaud 1988 a ; Blake 1991; Garraffoni and Amaral 2009; present data). Bhaud and Grémare (1988) pointed out that specimens of Eupolymina nebulosa have only one row of uncini until the larva is about 45 days old.…”

“…Buccal tentacles. It is generally accepted that the tentacles of Terebellidae and Trichobranchidae are prostomial based on the morphology of the adult [26,63,77] and the larvae [78][79][80][81][82][83]. Homology of the terebellid and trichobranchid prostomial tentacles with the tentacles of Ampharetidae, Melinnidae and Pectinariidae is debated.…”

“…Nicolea uspiana is one of the most abundant and widespread terebellid species on the south-eastern coast of Brazil with well-established populations occurring over a wide geographical range from the States of São Paulo to Paraná (Blankensteyn & Moreno, 1999;Nogueira, 2003;Garraffoni & Amaral, 2009;Santos et al, 2010). Garraffoni & Amaral (2009) argued that N. uspiana has indirect development with a brief planktonic stage, characteristic of lecithotrophic larvae.…”
