First report of Davaneidae and Strongylida parasitizing Ramphocelus carbo (Aves: Passeriformes: Thraupidae) in the southwest of the Brazilian Amazon region

Abstract: In Brazil, species of the genus Ramphocelus with the presence of various endoparasites have already been reported. Coccidia have been the parasites most frequently found. All species of this genus have similar habitats and ecological niches, which makes parasite transmission easy. The aim of this study was to diagnose the presence of endoparasites in fecal samples from specimens of Ramphocelus carbo that were caught in the Cazumbá-Iracema Extractive Reserve (Cazumbá Resex), in the State of Acre. The specimens … Show more

“…The silver-beaked tanager Ramphocelus carbo (Pallas, 1764) is a passerine bird with a wide distribution in South America, including southeastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru as far south as Ucayali, south of the Orinoco River in Venezuela, Guyana, and southward central Brazil (Hilty, 2020). Ramphocelus carbo uses shrubs in forest edges, plantations close to dwellings, and shrubs along rivers as habitat resources, mainly distributed in anthropized areas (Hilty, 2020;Souza et al, 2020).…”

“…Ramphocelus carbo (Pallas, 1764), a pipira-vermelha, é um pássaro amplamente distribuído na América do Sul que vive em arbustos nas bordas da floresta, lareiras cobertas de vegetação, plantações ao redor de moradias e vegetação densa de arbustos ao longo das margens dos rios em áreas úmidas e, especialmente, em áreas antropizadas (HILTY, 2018;SOUZA et al, 2020).…”

“…Ascaridia galli, Strongyloides sp., and Choanotaenia sp. are all known to parasitize domestic birds (Olivares et al 2006;Siqueira and Marques 2016;Marques et al 2019;Neto et al 2020) and, in the same region in Acre where the individuals of V. chilensis were captured, we have recorded parasites of three taxa (Strongyloides sp., Ascaridia sp., and Strongylida) in other bird species (Souza et al 2020), which indicates possible transmission between local birds that share the same environment.…”
