The gastropod-borne nematodes Angiostrongylus vasorum and Aelurostrongylus abstrusus are global causes of cardio/pulmonary diseases in dogs and cats. In the last decade, the number of reports on canine and feline lungworms has increased in several areas of Europe and North America. The unspecific clinical signs and prolonged course of these diseases often renders diagnosis challenging. Both infections are considered as emerging and underestimated causes of disease in domestic pets. In South America, little information is available on these diseases, apart from occasional reports proving the principle presence of A. vasorum and A. abstrusus. Thus, the purpose of this review is to summarize reports on infections in both domestic and wildlife animals in South America and to increase the awareness on gastropod-borne metastrongyloid parasites, which also include important zoonotic species, such as A. cantonensis and A. costaricensis. This review highlights the usefulness of diagnostic tools, such as the Baermann funnel technique, serology and PCR, and proposes to include these routinely on cases with clinical suspicion for lungworm infections. Future national epidemiological surveys are recommended to be conducted to gain a deeper insight into the actual epidemiological situation of gastropod-borne parasitoses in South America.

Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the state of knowledge about the helminthology of wild mammals in Argentine Patagonia and its link with the conservation of parasite species and biodiversity. To this end, the information included in the previously reported checklist of the helminths found in terrestrial wild mammals of Argentine Patagonia was completed and updated. The methodology used for the search was the same as that previously used, with slight modifications. Eighty-two species of mammals currently inhabit the region, and an additional six species are considered to have become extinct before the 20th century. The reports used to complete and update the information correspond to research done since 2015 to date. Considering the number of records analysed in the previously reported checklist and those of the current update, a total of 1918 helminthological reports for current Patagonian mammals and 2141 on mammal species that inhabited Patagonia before the 20th century were accounted for. It is important to point out that 41% of the 82 species of wild mammals currently inhabiting Patagonia have not been studied helminthologically; 38% of these without helminthological records are either threatened or do not have categorization, and 79% of mammals without helminthological studies have some degree of endemism. Therefore, in order to evaluate conservation priorities, the information about the parasitic richness in Patagonian wild mammals should be substantially increased, especially in those endangered or endemic.

Вивчення фауни паразитів, їхньої циркуляції в умовах біоценозів є важливим для систематичного прогнозування епізоотологічної ситуації щодо інвазійних хвороб на певних природно-географічних територіях. Дослідження різноманіття гельмінтів екзотичних зоопаркових ссавців дають змогу запобігти передачі збудників до свійських тварин та попередити розвиток зоонозних захворювань. Метою досліджень було встановити склад гельмінтофауни та рівень інвазованості ссавців різних видів в умовах зоопарків Дніпропетровської та Запорізької областей. Дослідження проведені у період з 2015 по 2017 р., всього обстежено 70 тварин представників ряду Carnivora, ряду Primates та надряду Ungulata. Діагностика гельмінтозів проведена копроскопічно із застосуванням методу МакМастера і кількісним підрахунком екземплярів яєць у 1 г фекалій. Відзначено переважне паразитування нематод шлунково-кишкового каналу: у хижих тварин підряду Ascaridata, у приматів – Trichurata та Rhabditata, у копитних – Strongylata та Trichurata. Середній показник екстенсивності гельмінтозної інвазії склав 82,86%, зокрема у ряді хижих тварин ЕІ – 88,24%, у приматів – 100%, у надряді копитних – 79,59%. Коливання ІІ у групі хижих тварин склали від 81,25 ± 6,29 до 175 ± 8,41 яєць/г, у приматів – 62,5 ± 5,59 – 125 ± 11,18 яєць/г, у копитних – 37,5 ± 5,59 – 316,67 ± 58,27 яєць/г. Більшість ідентифікованих представників є геогельмінтами, із біогельмінтів у хижаків виявлено – Dirofilaria immitis, а у копитних – Dicrocoelium lanceatum. Найбільш поширені моноінвазії – 58,62%, рідше зафіксовано наявність гельмінтів у вигляді дво- (29,31%), три- (8,62%) та чотирикомпонентних (3,45%) мікстінвазій. Встановлено метричні параметри яєць гельмінтів Baylisascaris sp., Toxocara sp., Toxascaris leoninа, Trichuris trichiura, Trichuris sp., Capillaria sp., Ancylostoma sp., Nematodirus sp., отриманих від екзотичних видів тварин. Вперше отримано дані щодо інвазованості тварин та різноманіття гельмінтофауни ссавців в умовах зоопарків Дніпропетровської та Запорізької областей. Результати досліджень є підґрунтям для проведення лікувально-профілактичних заходів, щодо інвазійних хвороб.
