Occurrence of Fasciola hepatica (Linnaeus, 1758) in capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) (Linnaeus, 1766) in Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: Fasciola hepatica is a parasite that affects the hepatic ducts of several species of domestic and wild vertebrates, causing huge economic losses to livestock rearing worldwide. Reports on occurrences of F. hepatica in capybaras are an important epidemiological aspect of this disease, since these rodents can be a source of contamination for other animals and humans. In the present study, conducted in a rural area of the municipality of Confins, Minas Gerais, fresh feces from capybaras were collected from the gr… Show more

“…This raises the possibility that the Eurasian beaver can act as an aberrant and occasional host to this parasite which is ubiquitous in northern Europe, which would support findings in Polish beavers 58 and work in other semi-aquatic rodents such as capybara, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris. 59 One post-mortem of a shot individual tested positive for Cryptosporidium spp., a potential zoonosis and domestic animal pathogen. The animal was in good body condition (3/5) with no evidence of an enteritis, although it also had S. subtriquetrus intestinal trematodes in the caecum.…”

“…The major parasites investigated have included helminths and protozoa. Helminths like Fasciola hepatica has been found in both capybara and cattle, but cause major disease problems in cattle [110][111][112]. Protozoan parasites of zoonotic importance reported in capybara include Cryptosporidium parvum [113].…”
