First record of Caligus mutabilis (Copepoda: Caligidae), in sea-farmed Mycteroperca microlepis (Perciformes: Serranidae) in Brazil

Abstract: Sea lice (copepods) are widespread pathogens in marine teleost cultivation around the world. The sea louse Caligus mutabilis Wilson, 1905, is recorded here for the first time in sea-farmed gag grouper, Mycteroperca microlepis, in Brazil.

“…The genus Caligus was first established by Müller (1785). A large number of Caligus species belonging to this genus have been reported worldwide (Carvajal, Gonzalez, & George–Nascimento, 1998; Öktener & Trilles, 2009; Özak et al, 2010; Sanches, Kerber, Paschoal, & Luque, 2012). All of these species could be characterized by specific generic features (Tansel & Fatih, 2012).…”

These parasites erode fishes epithelium leading secondary bacterial infections (Sanches et al, 2012). The sea lice of the family Caligidae are one of the most major health pathogens for farmed fish.…”
