Prevalence of liver condemnation due to bovine fasciolosis in Southern Espírito Santo: temporal distribution and economic losses

Abstract: The present study was conducted to evaluate the economic losses and temporal distribution of the prevalence of liver condemnation due to bovine fasciolosis. The abattoir in Atílio Vivácqua, in the South of the State of Espírito Santo, which is under state inspection by the veterinary service of the Livestock and Forest Protection Institute of Espírito Santo, was used as the data source. “…In this context, the state of Espírito Santo becomes a potential breeding site, due to the warm and humid climate and local topography to the development of the parasite and its host (Bernardo et al, 2011). Martins et al (2012) observed the existence of risk areas for fasciolosis in the southern region of this state and Freitas et al (2014) reported prevalence rates of up to 28.41% for the disease.…”

“…In a study by Bernardo et al (2011) with data from a slaughterhouse in the Atilio Vivácqua city, 27.625 livers were condemned due to fasciolosis, representing a prevalence of 24.89% between the years 2006 to 2009. Freitas et al (2014) also found high percentages of prevalence, being recorded mainly in the southern region of the state, with percentages ranging from 0.01 to 28.41%.…”
