Abundance and seasonality of Cochliomyia macellaria (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in Southern Pantanal, Brazil

Abstract: Cochliomyia macellaria (Diptera: Calliphoridae), known as the secondary screwworm, occurs in the Americas and has medical-veterinary and forensic importance. This study aimed to describe the seasonal fluctuation of this species in the Pantanal region, Central-Western Brazil. From December 2004 to November 2007 fly catches using four windoriented traps baited with decaying bovine liver were carried out at the Nhumirim ranch, Nhecolândia subregion, Southern Pantanal. Traps remained active throughout the study pe… Show more

“…Our results disagree with (Spencer, et al, 1981) who reported that the seasonal population lows during Spring 1978 and 1979 and the seasonal population highs during Winter in the tropical area and (Koller, et al, 2011) have recorded that screwworm populations reach their peak in late Autumn and early Winter. Oliveira, et al, (1982) also reported greater abundance of this species during the Winter and Spring in Rio de Janeiro.…”

“…Additional information obtained from screwworm adult captures contributed to providing a more complete distribution of C. hominivorax in the country ( Figure 2D, Table 2). Adults of C. hominivorax have been caught in several sites, mainly by traps baited with carcasses (ALVES et al, 2014;FARIA et al, 2018), rotting viscera or other decaying material (KOLLER et al, 2002(KOLLER et al, , 2011SOUSA et al, 2010;GONÇALVES et al, 2011;GADELHA et al, 2015;PEREIRA DE SOUSA et al, 2015OLIVEIRA et al, 2016). Although decaying baits are not the best attractant to a fly species causing primary myiasis, this relatively inexpensive and simple choice has provided useful information on the distribution of C. hominivorax in Brazil (Figure 2E).…”
