“…According to the Brazilian Institute of Statistics, IBGE [140,141], the general percentage of connected households rose from 46% in 2000 to 55% in 2010, and for the three largest urban centers, connectivity rates increased even more in the same time (Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Area 78-85%, São Paulo 79-87%, Rio de Janeiro 65-82%), but also indicate that ca 15% of the urban wastewater was still not connected in 2010. “…All practical solutions need to be tailored to the specific local settings at the reach scale; however, considering the entire catchment. As an example, we describe here activities taken to restore the Baleares creek in Belo Horizonte, Brazil [142,166]. The major problems to be tackled in this stream were water pollution, sedimentation, lack of flow diversity, degradation of the riparian vegetation, flood risk to badly sited residents, but the creek itself had not been canalized.…”

“…A inexistência de uma maior integração com a cidade e a degradação da qualidade das águas provou, ao longo do tempo, que as estratégias de engenharia fluvial e algumas das intervenções realizadas entre os séculos XIX e XX não foram as melhores soluções (BINDER, 1998;KONDOLF, 2012), tornando a necessidade de ações para melhoria da qualidade e da estrutura nesses rios e córregos algo inadiável (MACEDO & MAGALHÃES, 2011;MIGUEZ et al, 2015).…”

“…Historically, these effects can be associated with consequent Brazilian public policies that, following technical conceptions of Europe in the 19th century, stimulated urbanization projects guided by sanitary M. Procopiuck and A. Rosa 2 principles of positivist engineering (Abreu, 1997;Macedo & Magalhães Junior, 2011). In this process, acquiring utilitarian purposes based on the urban-industrial life style, the majority of Brazilian urban rivers started to function as drains for non-treated industrial and residential effluents.…”
