The ecological status of prehistoric Amazonian forests remains widely debated. The concept of ancient Amazonia as a pristine wilderness is largely discredited, but the alternative hypothesis of extensive anthropogenic landscapes remains untested in many regions. We assessed the degree of ancient human impacts across western Amazonia based on archeological and paleoecological data using methodologies that would allow inter-regional comparisons. We also aimed to establish baselines for estimating the legacies of ancient disturbances on modern vegetation. We analyzed charcoal and phytolith assemblages from soil samples from an archeological site, sites in close proximity to archeological sites, sites from riverine and interfluvial forests, and a biological research station believed to contain some of the least disturbed forests within Amazonia. We then quantitatively compared phytolith assemblages within and between the surveyed regions. Palm enrichment was evident at the archeological site, and the biological station survey contained little to no evidence of ancient human activity. The other sites exhibited a gradient of ancient disturbance across the landscape. The phytolith assemblages showed statistically significant between-region variations that indicated our metrics were sufficiently sensitive to detecting ancient disturbance. Our data highlight the spatial heterogeneity of ancient human disturbances in Amazonian forests. The quantification of these disturbances provides empirical data and a more concrete link between the composition of the modern forest and ancient disturbance regimes. Accounting for ancient disturbances will allow a deeper understanding of the landscape heterogeneity observed in the modern forests.

RESUMOOs resíduos sólidos gerados pela sociedade humana, geralmente vistos apenas como fonte de problemas ambientais, podem ser reutilizados, gerando trabalho, renda e diminuindo a velocidade de esgotamento dos recursos naturais. O presente estudo visou classificar e quantificar os resíduos sólidos descartados por residências e comércios do município de Tefé, Amazonas, além de avaliar possíveis ganhos financeiros por meio de vendas para reciclagem. Como resultado, estimou-se que cerca de 27% de todos os resíduos produzidos podem ser reciclados, gerando renda financeira que poderia fomentar cooperativas de catadores gerando renda e emprego. Os residentes e comerciantes demonstram desconhecer os benefícios gerados pela reciclagem, bem como o impacto ambiental causado pelo resíduo. Somente alguns poucos órgãos e instituições proporcionam iniciativas de ações quanto ao aproveitamento e reciclagem, e a maioria aponta dificuldades para por em prática projetos e ações voltadas aos resíduos sólidos. ABSTRACTThe solid waste generated by human society, generally seen as environmental problem source, can be re-utilized, generating jobs, money and diminishing natural resources extracting rate. The present study aimed to classify and quantify the solid waste disposed of by residents and business owners in Tefé, Amazon, to determine possible financial gains from the sale for recycling. According to the result was estimated that about of 27% all produced waste can be recycled, generating financial income and job. Residents and business owners are unaware of the benefits generated by recycling as well as the environmental impact caused by waste. Only a few agencies and institutions provide affirmative actions regarding recovery and recycling, and most point to difficulty to set aside projects and actions aimed at solid waste.

The Amazon region presents challenges for the management of municipal solid waste (MSW), due to its social, environmental, and economic vulnerabilities. This work investigated MSW management in the Amazon and in the Southwest Brazilian Amazon (SWBRAM). A bibliographic search (from 2007 to 2019) was performed for articles published in scientific journals and in official reports, related to MSW management in the countries of the Amazon. Visits in loco to the Brazilian municipalities of Humaitá and Manicoré, in Amazonas State (AM), and Ariquemes, in Rondônia State (RO), gathered information about the characteristics of MSW (Humaitá), the conditions of a waste-collection cooperative (Manicoré), and the management of a sanitary landfill (Ariquemes). The bibliographic search found only sixteen articles, highlighting the following aspects of MSW management in the Amazon: high organic-matter content (50%) and low MSW generation. There was significant disposal of waste in dumps, an incipient recycling market, and a lack of infrastructure for logistics. The MSW management scenario for the SWBRAM was similar to that for the Amazon. In Humaitá, MSW was deposited in a dump, leading to the presence of waste pickers. In Manicoré, only plastic, paper, and aluminum could feasibly be transported on the Madeira River to the recycling industry in Manaus (AM). The high rainfall and the distance to transport MSW were the main issues related to landfill management in Ariquemes. Management actions proposed in the literature present limitations in the Amazon environment, so there is the need for continuous investment in MSW prevention programs and treatment technologies, besides optimizing recycling and composting.
