Abstract

Atilo Borón is a social scientist, with a Master degree in Political Sciences by the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO) and a Doctorate in Philosophy by the University of Harvard. He is Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Executive Secretary of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO). In his work, he deals with the relations between the State, democracy, globalization, civil rights and imperialism in contemporary capitalism, in particular with regard to Latin America. The author has three books published in Brazil: A coruja de Minerva: mercado contra a democracia no fim de século; Estado, capitalismo e democracia na América Latina; and Filosofia política marxista. In the present interview, Borón looks again at some of these issues, discussing, on the one hand, the relationship between democracy and education and, on the other, transnational companies, technocracy, the market, extreme poverty and the domain of the ephemeral.
