Perception of barriers to physical exercise in women population over 60

Abstract: -Aims:This study evaluated the possible barriers to the permanence of physical exercise (PE) of old women. Methods: The study population comprised 61 old women participants for at least one year of a supervised PE program, who underwent anamnesis, and applied the Barriers Questionnaire to Physical Activity Practice in the Elderly (QBPAFI). Exploratory factorial analysis was used to evaluate QBPAFI data. The analysis of principal component was applied to the 22 questions through orthogonal rotation to analyze t… Show more

“…The main reasons for abandonment of the older adults in the present study were lack of time, emergence of diseases, and occurrence of illness in relatives. The present data are similar to other studies that also evaluated this construct [7,25,26,28]. However, reports of pain, fatigue, and inadequate exercise, which are usually also cited as reasons for dropout [7,28], were rarely reported in the present study.…”

“…Therefore, it is possible to note the increase in demand for physical exercise practices, encouraged by the knowledge of the practical benefits and importance of maintaining independence [25]. However, after initiating physical exercise, many older adults end up not continuing the practice, which reflects in low adherence to the proposed programs [7,26,27].…”

“…Ademais, considerando que a população estudada foi de idosos com DM2, que são mais susceptíveis a incapacidades físicas [4][5][6] , os resultados positivos deste estudo suportam a importância do TM no manejo e prevenção de déficits funcionais nessa população. Apesar disso, como todo programa de exercício físico aplicado à idosos, a implementação do TM deve ser acompanhada de estratégias que visem desconstruir as diversas barreiras que contribuem para não aderência dos participantes 34 .…”

“…It is our belief that the emphasis of muscle strengthening exercise is even more critical for OAs because of the higher risk of sarcopenia and loss of independence in this population ( Yazar and Yazar, 2019 ). There are several barriers to physical activity in OAs that can be targeted to increase participation [e.g., time, cost, disinterest, ongoing pain or illness, fear of injury, and feeling too old ( Rasinaho et al, 2007 ; Aily et al, 2017 ; Burton et al, 2017a )]. Additional barriers specific to RET include perceived complexity of RET programs, lack of knowledge, and lack of age-appropriate programs ( Phillips and Winett, 2010 ; Burton et al, 2017a , b ).…”
