Physical actions and work-rest time in men's beach volleyball

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the ball contacts, jumps, hits, work time, and rest ratio in male beach volleyball players in relation to their tactical roles. The sample of this study included 6970 rallies played by 91 beach volleyball players, which corresponded to 179 sets of the 2008 Men's Beach Volleyball World Tour (FIVB). We analyzed: ball contacts, jumps, hits, work time, rest time, set (first, second or third), and player's tactical role (e.g., defense specialist, blocker, or no specialization… Show more

“…Almujahed, Ongor, Tigmo, and Sagoo (2013) equated all touches of the ball as follows: serve and attack with hits, and reception, set, block and dig-defense with contacts. Others associated them individually: serve with hit (Lidor & Mayan, 2005;López, 2013); reception, set, block and dig-defense with contact (Afonso et al, 2012;Palao et al, 2014); and attack with hit (Palao et al, 2014). In this study, every touch of the ball during the point is divided into one of two basic groups: hits and contacts.…”

“…A comparison of the results with rally duration in other net and wall sports shows that volleyball is somewhere in the middle. In tennis the rally lasts 5-7 seconds (Kovacs, 2004;Smekal et al, 2001), in badminton 6.2 seconds (Férnandez-Férnandez, de la Aleja-Téllez, Moya-Ramón, CabelloManrique, & Méndez-Villanueva, 2013), in beach volleyball 7.25 seconds (Palao et al, 2014) and in squash 18.6 seconds (Girard et al, 2007).…”

“…This difference is related to the specialization by playing position, because in teams where roles changed there is no such differentiation (Palao, Gutierrez, & Frideres, 2008). Consequently, according to the literature that states that the tactical roles are set depending on the physical capacity of the players (Palao, Valadés, Manzanares, & Ortega, 2014), the optimal game model assumes the combination of high-blocker and lower but agile defender (Kim, Yusof, Lam, Fauzee, & Kwong, 2012).…”
