Preflaring effects on the accuracy of three electronic apex locators

Abstract: Purpose: To compare the accuracy of three electronic apex locators (EALs) and evaluate the influence of cervical preflaring in them. Methods: The working length (WL) of thirty extracted human mandibular incisors was determined visually. All teeth were mounted in conducting medium and tested with: Novapex, Mini Apex Locator and Propex II. The electronic WL was determined before and after preflaring with LA Axxess burs. Differences between the electronic and visual WL were calculated and analyzed by Friedman and… Show more

“…The accurate readings were also superior in the pre-flared canals for the Novapex using #10 and #15 K-files. A recent study 21 showed that the accuracy of the Novapex increased after the pre-flaring of the incisor mandibular canals, but there was no significant difference compared with the un-flared canals. Equivalent performances of the Novapex and Root ZX could be expected using a #20 K-file in the pre-flared canals in the present study.…”

“…Other factors still need to be more questionable and require further research. In the present study, pre-widening of the cervical and middle thirds was performed to favor electronic determinations of EFLs, as suggested in previous works (17,14,15). Although Ebrahim et crease in the apical diameter of instrumentation did not significantly influence the efficacy of the devices.…”
