Prevalence of soft tissue calcifications in cone beam computed tomography images of the mandible

Abstract: Purpose: To determine the prevalence of soft tissue calcifications in the mandible in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Methods: The sample was composed by 246 CBCT scans of the mandible; 163 were acquired by the NewTom 3G ® system, and 83 were acquired by the Classic i-Cat ® system. When the presence of soft tissue calcification was confirmed in the mandible, the anatomical location and the type of calcification (single or multiple) were determined. Elongated styloid process and ossification of the … Show more

“…Additionally, small calcifications cannot be generally detected in radiographs, and therefore the incidence of soft tissue calcifications is expected to be higher than the reported results. Only in one study, cone beam computed tomography was used to assess the prevalence of soft tissue calcifications but stylohyoid ligament calcification was excluded from that study (9). calcifications were bilateral and 1 case of sialolithiasis was found to be unilateral.…”

“…This is especially challenging when using panoramic radiographs, since 2D imaging techniques can create ghost images 5253. Nunes et al11 reported that a higher prevalence of soft tissue calcifications was found on CBCT images as compared to conventional images.…”

“…In addition, this review also focuses on optimization of CBCT with the goal of reconstructing each image at a low exposure rate. Table 1 details the clinical applications of CBCT in dental practice, while Table 2 summarizes studies from the existing literature that highlight the application of this emerging 3D imaging modality in dentistry 567891011121314…”

“…C alcification is a biochemical phenomenon, characterized by the deposition of calcium salts, mainly calcium phosphate, in a certain region of the organism [1][2][3]. However, when it occurs disorganized in soft tissues, it is referred to as heterotopic calcification, which can be divided into three: dystrophic, idiopathic and metastatic [1,2].…”
