Handling errors in conventional and smart pump infusions: A systematic review with meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective: To identify the scientific evidence on the frequency of handling errors of conventional and smart pump infusions in intravenous insulin therapy in intensive care units. Method: A systematic review with meta-analysis conducted in the Virtual Health Library, MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Articles were assessed regarding the level of evidence by applying the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine Evidence Scale. Results: Twelve (12) publications were selected which me… Show more

“…The alert of absolute limits, on the other hand, promotes the cancellation or reprogramming of the infusion. [14][15] It is currently one of the recommended technologies for greater safety in the administration of venous solutions. 15 However, although smart pumps represent a major advance for intravenous therapy, alternative solutions may be performed by users to bypass the safety barrier (the alarms) of the device.…”

“…IV medication infusion devices, such as infusion pumps and smart pumps, are widely used in healthcare environments and allow more rigorous control in the process of administering medications that are continuously infused [45]. Smart pumps are recognized as useful devices for providing safe and effective nursing care [15]. However, the use of IV medication infusion devices requires an approach different from traditional rate monitoring by counting the number of uid drops falling into the drip chamber [9].…”
