Show more

“…In a study conducted by Souza et al 21 with 72 institutionalized elderly and 341 community--dwelling elderly, aged between 60 to 89 years, better mobility was observed in those aged between 60 and 69 years, corroborating the results of the present research. Still, the same authors affirm that, parallel to the decrease in functional mobility, there is an increased risk of falling.…”

“…(2,3,7) The present study demonstrates that subjects belonging to the older age groups, require more time to complete the TUG, thus, and according to the considerations Podsiadlo and Richardson, (6) we may interpret that the increase in age causes a decline in functional mobility and consequently increases the risk of falls in the elderly, corroborating other studies that demonstrated the positive association of increasing age with a greater propensity for falls. (8,9) Shumway-Cook et. al., verified the ability of the elderly to perform the TUG under specific conditions, and additional tasks (cognitive or physical) were performed simultaneously to the execution of the test.…”

“…(5) Among the factors which predispose to falls in the elderly, the deterioration of functional mobility is among the most relevant and it is considered an important predictor in the assessment for falls risk. (6,7) Functional mobility may be affected by intrinsic factors such as age and extrinsic factors such as physical activity level, both interfering negatively, with the increasing age predisposes to a reduction in functional mobility (8,9) and the lower level of physical activity will decreased the functional mobility in the elderly. (10,11) Thus, considering that low levels of physical activity and functional mobility are directly proportional to the mortality of the elderly, the present study aimed to verify the physical activity level and functional mobility of elderly and to evaluate if this functional mobility suffers interference of age and physical activity.…”

“…On the other hand, in the present study, 52% of the population presented dependence for ADL's and 66.6% of them were dependent, which indicates limitations in the functionality of the evaluated subjects. Such a limitation can cause loss of independence in basic life activities, changes in gait and imbalance, remaining in constant reduction in both genders (14)(15)(16)(17) . Fhon, et al (8) , with evaluation instruments similar to those applied in this study, observed a greater dependence for ADL's and also observed that the more comorbidities, the greater the level of dependence of this population.…”
