Introduction: falls are a geriatric syndrome, and among the risk factors there are the balance and walking problems, becoming necessary the evaluation of these parameters for targeting care to prevent falls.Objective: evaluating the balance and the walk as predictors of the risk of falls in the elderly. Methods:A cross-sectional, exploratory and quantitative study conducted with 130 elderly. There were evaluated the balance and the walking through the Tinetti Scale and the data were analyzed using statistical software. The study was approved by the ethics Committee under the advice number 963.157.Results: 60% of the sample presented an average risk for falls, and the average test of balance and walking was lower among older people with a history of falls. Conclusion:it is important that nurses perform multidimensional geriatric assessment in order to detect changes and minimize the risk of falls in the elderly.

a RESUMOOBJETIVOS: Investigar o perfil sociodemográfico do idoso vítima de trauma por queda internado na unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI) de um hospital público de referência e verificar a correlação entre idade, comorbidades, tempo de internação, complicações e desfechos clínicos. MÉTODOS: Estudo retrospectivo analítico, de abordagem quantitativa, cuja coleta de dados foi realizada na UTI do Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal da Secretaria de Estado de Saúde do Distrito Federal, DF, no período de abril a outubro de 2014. Informações sociodemográficas relacionadas ao mecanismo do trauma, comorbidades, tempo de internação, uso de dispositivos invasivos, drogas vasoativas e sedativos, complicações e desfechos clínicos dos idosos internados por queda entre julho de 2012 e julho de 2014 foram coletadas por meio de prontuário informatizado TrakCare®. RESULTADOS: A amostra foi composta de 52 idosos, com prevalência do sexo masculino e queda da própria estatura como mecanismo de lesão. As principais intercorrências foram a infecção pulmonar, a realização de traqueostomia decorrente de falha de extubação ou intubação prolongada, o choque séptico, o uso de hemoderivados e a insuficiência renal aguda. Apesar da alta mortalidade observada no estudo, a maioria dos idosos sobreviveu ao evento traumático e a mortalidade esteve associada ao sexo masculino, ao trauma cranioencefálico (TCE), ao choque séptico de foco pulmonar e à diálise. CONCLUSÃO: A queda da própria estatura, o TCE grave e as fraturas apresentaram alta prevalência, e a maioria dos pacientes exibiu mais de uma complicação durante a internação. Não houve associação significativa entre mortalidade e idade. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: idoso; acidentes por quedas; trauma; unidade de terapia intensiva. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVES:To investigate the sociodemographic profile of elderly victims of trauma from falls admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a public hospital of reference and the correlation between age, comorbidities, length of stay, complications and clinical outcomes. METHODS: Analytical retrospective study with a quantitative approach, which data collection, was performed in the ICU of the Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal (HBDF), of the Secretary of State of Health of the Distrito Federal (SES/ DF) (DF), from April to October 2014. Sociodemographic information related to the mechanism of injury, comorbidities, length of stay, use of invasive devices, vasoactive drugs and sedatives, complications and clinical outcomes of elderly patients admitted for fall between July 2012 and July 2014 were collected through electronic medical record TrakCare®. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 52 elderly, with prevalence of males and the very height fall, as the mechanism of injury. The main complications were pulmonary infection, tracheostomy due to extubation failure or prolonged intubation, septic shock, the use of blood products and acute renal failure. Population aging is a global challenge experienced by most developed and developing countries. There are diverse deleterious changes produced by aging process resulting in reduction of the effectiveness of various systems which can contribute to the occurrence of falls in the elderly. Elderly falls can have serious consequences and constitute a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, research is critically needed for establishing effective policies to reduce risk.Objective: This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of elderly falls and identify associated factors in Sohag Governorate. Methods:A cross-sectional, population-based study conducted from December 2015 to April 2016 in a sample of non-institutionalized elderly people (60 years old or more), living in Sohag governorate.It included 1034participants. A questionnaire was designed to obtain data about history of falls in the previous 12 months and its associated factors.Results:Findings showed that 33.35% of the studied elderly populationin Sohag Governorate reported that they experienced falls in the previous year.Age, living alone, lighting, presence of stairs and carpets had a highly significant effect (P-value <0.001) on the incidence of falls among the studied population. Medication use, balance and mobility factors,most of the medical and psychological factors significantly affected the occurrence of falls among the studied population.Conclusion:The prevalence of falls in elderly is relatively high in Sohag Governorate. Identification of factors significantly affecting elderly falls can help in planning public health policies and programs for prevention of falls.
