Associação entre perda auditiva e sintomatologia depressiva em idosos

“…Hearing One study that compared the auditory complaint with the objective measurement of auditory thresholds found that the elderly who did not report complaints, 46% had hearing loss in different degrees 25 . Other situations may influence the reference on hearing loss by the elderly, such as acceptance, adaptation to this new condition, clearance situations that may represent obstacles to its communication and the presence of certain morbidities that preclude recognition of this deficit.…”

“…In Brazil, there are currently some studies (8,12,13,14,15,16,17,18) showing the usefulness of participationrestricting questionnaires to identify individuals with hearing loss and, in Rio Grande do Sul, the HHIE-S questionnaire was used to evaluate the subjective impact of an auditory rehabilitation program in the elderly (19). On the other hand, there are studies verifying the association between the complaint and the presence of hearing loss in the elderly (20) and showing the prognostic value, sensitivity and specificity of the simple inquiry about the presence of hearing loss (21) in the State of Rio Grande do Sul.…”

“…However, other studies have shown there is no relationship between the complaint and the presence of hearing loss 7,8,22,23 . This can be explained by the variability in the perception of hearing loss due to the lifestyle of each senior, or also by the prevalence of losses at a lesser degree, as well as the configuration of the loss and the progression of presbycusis, which causes the subject to not yet perceive hearing changes.…”

“…Thus, it is clear the importance of referring senior individuals to audiological evaluations and also to hearing processing tests, especially in individuals with complaints regarding speech comprehension. This attitude is essential, because the hearing loss affects the communication process of individuals, causes a removal from society and family, creates isolation and is associated with worsening of depression 22 . This study emphasized the importance of using self-assessment surveys, even those formulated with simple questions, such as the one used in this research, because these instruments are able to detect any suspected hearing loss and thus allow referrals to specialized services, taking into account the large increase the number of people aged 60 years or more and the high prevalence of presbycusis in this population.…”
