Polymorphisms in the 5-HTR2A gene related to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is one of the most complex disorders of sleep; it involves several genetic factors that contribute to the phenotype. Serotonin (5-HT) regulates a variety of visceral and physiological functions, including sleep. Gene 5-HTR2A polymorphisms may change the transcription of several receptors in the serotoninergic system, thereby contributing to OSAS. Aim To investigate the prevalence of T102C and -1438G/A polymorphisms in the 5-HTR2A gene of patie… Show more

“…ARL6IP6 (MIM 616495) is an ADP-Ribosylation-Like Factor 6 Interacting Protein 6, associated with ischemic stroke [ 27 ]. HTR2A (MIM 18135) is a Serotonin 5-HT-2A Receptor with effects on sleep quality [ 28 ]. Reduction of TRPM3 (MIM 608961) is described to be associated with chronic fatigue syndrome/Myalgic encephalomyelitis patients [ 29 ], and FGF2 (MIM 134920) has been proposed to play a role in intussusceptive angiogenesis during COVID-19 [ 30 ].…”

“…In our present study, SNP related to sleep, including HTR2A and ADRB1, were first detected. HTR2A is one of the central nervous system neurotransmitters involved in regulating physiological functions, including sleep 62 . Its polymorphisms were found to be significantly associated with increased risk of poor sleep quality in previous studies 32,33,62–64 .…”

“…31 Multiple polymorphisms in HTR2A, HTR1A, HTR2B, and HTR3C were identied in patients with high blood pressure, 32,33 metabolic syndrome, 32 and obstructive sleep apnea. 34 Via deepDTnet, we computationally identify several validated off-targets for alosetron and tegaserod (Table S6 †), which may help explain the molecular mechanisms of several adverse effects, such as sleep disorder and angina pectoris (Fig. 4B).…”
