“…PCM is the most prevalent chronic infection of the upper airdigestive tract in Latin America, whose importance is related to its severity, sequelae in spite of appropriate therapy, and repercussion on the quality of life [ 10 , 11 ]. Consistent with previous studies [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ], most of our patients were men, adults, cigarette smokers and alcoholics who previously resided or currently reside in rural areas.…”

“…Gender and age of the patients within our group were not different from other studies, showing prevalence of males, with average age around 40 years. 2,4,6,8,11,17,22 Studies indicate that the frequency of chronic cases is very low among women, and that is related to the inhibitory action of estrogen over the fungus transformation from mycelium, the infective form, to yeast, parasitic phase. 11 As in other diseases, PCM patients present alcoholism and smoking as associated factors.…”

“…Interestingly, fatigue, weight loss, and fever seem not to be prominent manifestations [8] . It usually presents as ulcerated lesions with a mulberry-like appearance or as vegetations, and many patients have multiple laryngeal lesions, with involvement of the true and false vocal folds, the epiglottis, and the arytenoid and interarytenoid areas [8] , [12] . In a case series of 17 consecutive cases with laryngeal PCM diagnosed between 1978 and 1999 in Rio de Janeiro, lesions were often present at multiple mucosal sites (laryngeal and non-laryngeal), and lung involvement was common [13] .…”
