Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials: an overview

Abstract: The vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test is a relatively new diagnostic tool that is in the process of being investigated in patients with specific vestibular disorders. Briefly, the VEMP is a biphasic response elicited by loud clicks or tone bursts recorded from the tonically contracted sternocleidomastoid muscle, being the only resource available to assess the function of the saccule and the lower portion of the vestibular nerve. Aim: In this review, we shall highlight the history, methods, curre… Show more

“…The mean values obtained were found to be consistent with P1 (P13) and N1 (P23) values in the literature [20][21][22][23][24][25] . Berry et al 26 did not find any relationship between Tinnitus Disability Questionnaire (TDQ) scores and pure voice mean and speech discrimination scores.…”

“…De Waele et al 19 implemented cVEMP in the patients diagnosed with Meniere and no response was obtained by 54% 19 . VEMP test may be used for diagnostic purposes during earlay stages of Meniere's syndrome 20,21 . Shepard VEMP test with the diagnosis of Meniere's disease may occur in the future could be reported early 22 .…”

“…After appropriate skin cleaning, surface electrodes are placed on the following positions: active, on the upper one-third of SCM; reference electrode, on the anterior margin of ipsilateral clavicle; and ground electrode, on the forehead. The patients turn their head by 45º to the contralateral side with slight head flexion by ⁓30º in the sitting position and the responses were recorded from the ipsilateral SCM muscle (8). The stimulus was delivered monaurally via supra-aural head phone (TDH-39).…”
