Critical management studies: some reflections

Abstract: This paper seeks to challenge some assumptions associated with Critical Management Studies (CMS). This is done based on insights originating from the Actor-Network Theory (ANT), an approach that can be considered as an empirical form of post-structuralism and that has gained prominence in social sciences. Fundamentally, this paper broadly reviews some key CMS ideas associated with this perspective ontology to argue that what CMS usually tends to take as explanation is exactly what has to be explained. CMS has also been critiqued for closing off space for plural voices (Wray-Bliss, 2004), and for an over-focus on negative critique that leaves out consideration of how fields are "positively" constructed (McLean & Alcadipani, 2008). “…For a less refl exively sensitive version, oriented to improving design see Button and Dourish (1996). 7 For an example of a reverse argument, in which ANT has been enrolled to challenge some assumptions associated with Critical Management Studies, see McLean and Alcadipani (2008). 8 http://www.studioincite.com/ 9 http://www.virtualknowledgestudio.nl/ 10 Of course, this 'revelation' is unlikely to be news to anyone who has coauthored an academic paper.…”
