Impact of glycemic control on the incidence of acute kidney injury in critically ill patients: a comparison of two strategies using the RIFLE criteria

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To compare the renal outcome in patients submitted to two different regimens of glycemic control, using the RIFLE criteria to define acute kidney injury.INTRODUCTION:The impact of intensive insulin therapy on renal function outcome is controversial. The lack of a criterion for AKI definition may play a role on that.METHODS:Included as the subjects were 228 randomly selected, critically ill patients engaged in intensive insulin therapy or in a carbohydrate-restrictive strategy. Renal outcome was evalu… Show more

“…The sit-and-reach test is a common measure of flexibility of the hamstrings and lower back muscles. The rehabilitation program contained stretching exercises for the major muscle groups of the lower limbs, as recommended in the literature [6,44]. However, it is possible that this ability has not improved due to the duration (about 5 min) and frequency (2 times/wk) of the stretching exercises, which are below the recommended levels for people with osteoarthritis [45][46].…”

“…Given that knee OA is a long-term chronic condition, allowing people to self-manage and perform their exercise programmes within their own home may be advantageous [49]. Previous studies have demonstrated that home-exercise programmes can be successfully delivered providing favourable clinical outcomes in this population [50,51]. However, only hospital-delivery exercises were shown to improve JPS compared to home-based interventions in Tunay et al's [52] study.…”
