Hypertension and Depression

Abstract: Scalco AZ, Scalco MZ, Azul JBS, Lotufo Neto F. Hypertension and depression. Clinics. 2005;60(3):241-50.Despite the high prevalence of depression and hypertension, the relationship between the two diseases has received little attention. This paper reviews the epidemiological, pathophysiological, and prognostic aspects of this association, as well as its implications for treatment. A Medline search was conducted using the following key words: depression, blood pressure, blood pressure variability, physical morbi… Show more

“…Moreover, a depressive disorder is 4-5 times more common in patients who experience a heart failure than among those in the general population [24] , with a prevalence that ranges from 13 to 77% [23] . Also, an increased prevalence of hypertension was described for depressed patients and at the same time, an increased prevalence of depression was acknowledged for hypertensive patients [25] . Considering the clinical context and the fact that nebivolol is extensively metabolized via the cytochrome P450 2D6 pathway [4] , bupropion is a potent inhibitor of the same isoenzyme [22] ; it was of clinical importance to evaluate a potential PK interaction between the 2 drugs.…”

“…Other diseases that are correlated with BP but not included in the study, such as kidney disease 24 and depression, 25 can also generate substantial medical costs. Thus, our model generates conservative estimates of the likely savings associated with the use of HBPM.…”

“…[6][7][8][9] Although depression is a burdensome disease of global importance and prevalent, it is mostly undiagnosed in patients with hypertension. [10][11] Community-based epidemiological studies in Saudi Arabia have found that the prevalence of depression ranges from 17% to 46% 12 and prevalence of hypertension ranges from 25.5% to 26.1%. [13][14][15] Some previous studies in Saudi Arabia have explored the association between hypertension and depression, based on clinically relevant symptoms, but to the best of our knowledge there has no study specifically designed to explore the prevalence of depression among hypertensive patients in the region.…”
