-International studies have shown that motor coordination was inversely associated with adiposity, and directly associated with other health outcomes. However, there are few national studies addressing this issue and the results are divergent. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between physical activity and body mass index (BMI) with the level of motor coordination performance in children. This cross-sectional study was performed with children aged 5-7 years old. The level of motor performance was evaluated by normative data of the motor quotients assessed by KTK test. BMI was calculated by body weight and height. The level of physical activity was assessed by a questionnaire applied by interviewers with parents. Statistical analysis was performed by Spearman and Pearson test, and multiple linear regression. The sample included 665 children with mean age of 6.29 (± 0.75) years old, and 52.6% were male. It was verified which total motor quotient (TMQ) was directly related to physical activity score (0.096; p = 0.013) and inversely related to BMI (-0.284; p<0.001). The relationship between BMI and TMQ was moderated by family income. BMI was inversely related to the level of motor performance, and the score of physical activity was directly related to the level of motor performance in children in a higher family income. Comparative analysis of gross motor coordination between overweight/obese and eutrophic children

Introduction: Overweight and obese children may have lower motor coordination score than normal-weight children. Objective: To compare gross motor coordination between overweight/obese and normal-weight children and investigate the associated factors with the motor coordination scores. Method: This cross-sectional study involved 169 children of both genders, aged 6-9 years. Children with malformations, bone, muscle, and joint or neurological disorders, and BMI z < -2 were excluded. Gross motor coordination was assessed by the “Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder” (KTK). The associated factors with the motor coordination scores were analyzed by linear regression. Results: The mean scores for balancing backwards (84.2 ± 13.2 vs. 91.0 ± 15.0), hopping over on one foot (127.9 ± 10.1 vs. 132.3 ± 12.1), shifting platforms sidewise (123.5 ± 23.4 vs. 129.8 ± 14.9), as well as the overall motor scores (112.5 ± 14.8 vs. 118.8 ± 11.6) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in overweight/obese children when compared to normal-weight children. The percentage of poor motor scores (< 85) in balancing backwards was higher in overweight/obese children (60.4% vs. 36.4%, p = 0.004) and was similar for jumping sideways (18.8% vs. 9.9%, p = 0.116), as well as for shifting platforms sidewise (6.3% vs. 0.8%, p = 0.070). By multiple linear regression analysis, the variables overweight/obesity and sports practice for less than 2 times/week decreased significantly (p < 0.05) the motor coordination score by -18.7 and -15.6 points, respectively. Conclusion: The overweight/obese children scored lower in the motor coordination tests compared to the normal-weight children. Overweight/obesity and low frequency of physical activity were associated with lower scores of gross motor coordination.

Objetivou-se comparar o desempenho motor nas tarefas da bateria Körperkoordination Test für Kinder (KTK) de crianças com diferentes status de peso. Participaram do estudo, 350 crianças de oito a 10 anos. Investigaram-se: Índice de massa corporal (IMC), circunferência de cintura (CC), razão cintura-estatura (RCEst) e tarefas do KTK. Utilizou-se o teste qui-quadrado para verificar associações e o teste de Kruskal Wallis para comparação das pontuações das tarefas motoras entre os status de peso. Verificaram-se que os meninos com sobrepeso e obesidade apresentaram piores resultados na tarefa de equilíbrio em marcha à retaguarda (p<0,001) e saltos monopedais (p<0,011), comparados aos meninos com baixo peso e eutróficos. Além disso, meninas obesas apresentaram piores resultados na tarefa de equilíbrio em marcha à retaguarda (p<0,001) comparadas às meninas com baixo peso, peso normal e sobrepeso. Conclui-se que crianças sobrepeso e obesidade apresentaram piores desempenhos nas tarefas do KTK comparadas às crianças eutróficas e com baixo peso.
