This article presents an exploratory analysis of the expansion of the railway network and the practice of football in São Paulo state (Brazil). An isolated region of Brazil experienced an economic boom in the middle of the nineteenth century due to the expansion of the coffee production. This transformed the region from an underdeveloped province into the most populous and richest state in Brazil, which resulted in the rapid expansion of the railway network. Designed initially to take the coffee to the coast, and transport workers and industrialized goods, the railway connected the small cities to the larger population centers, bringing new trends and fashions from abroad. Football would also spread alongside the railway network. The people responsible for its construction and administration were also associated with the creation of the first football clubs in the state, presenting this new practice to the local elites and urban dwellers. This article focuses on the foundation of the first football clubs in the most important cities of São Paulo state, analyzing the impact that the expansion of the railway played in the popularization of football, especially how in the majority of the cases the first football clubs were founded by railway personnel.

ResumoNeste ensaio buscamos discutir alguns aspectos do futebol, a partir de um olhar sistêmico da sociedade. Faremos uma breve passagem pelos autores ligados às ciências sociais que interpretaram a relação orgânica entre futebol, nação e brasilidade. Para isso, discutiremos a questão do corpo, da ginga e da reinterpretação cultural de um jogo praticado por ingleses em São Paulo, para uma ressignificação brasileira de como jogar e valorizar o futebol como um patrimônio nacional. Abordaremos, também, os territórios e as identidades do futebol no Estado de São Paulo, como foram constituídos espaços e a transformação dos mesmos, de um jogo praticado às margens do Rio Tietê, até a construção do monumento do Estádio Municipal do Pacaembu.Palavras-chave: Futebol; São Paulo; Sociologia do Esporte.Una lectura del fútbol en São Paulo: la ginga, territorios e identidades Resumen En este ensayo se discuten algunos aspectos del fútbol, desde una perspectiva sistémica de la sociedad. Para esto, vamos a discutir el tema del cuerpo, la ginga y la reinterpretación cultural de un juego jugado por los ingleses en Sao Paulo, Brasil, para una redefinición brasileña sobre cómo jugar y apreciar el fútbol como un bien nacional. O presente artigo investiga a relação entre o Paulista Futebol Clube de Jundiaí e a Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro nas duas primeiras décadas do século XX. A partir do cruzamento de fontes documentais do Clube com o Banco de Dados Ferrovia, Cidade e Trabalhadores, a conquista do Oeste (1850-1920), revela-se o perfil dos ferroviários participantes da agremiação futebolística, trazendo à tona a dimensão paternalista das relações entre a equipe de futebol e a ferrovia.
