Semen quality and reproductive performance of boars kept in pens containing conventional coffee husk as a floor covering

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to evaluate the putative effects of the use of coffee husk as floor covering on boar semen quality. Sixteen boars were divided into two groups. The first group was held in a conventional system with a compact floor. The second group was kept on a compact floor covered with coffee pods. The experimental period was 60 days. Levels of caffeine and chlorogenic acid in the insemination doses (ID) before and after 96 h of storage at 15 °C and the reproductive performance (litter size… Show more

“…Recently, Teles et al. () evaluated the use of the coffee husk as a floor covering for boars and detected the presence of caffeine, but not ChA in the semen of the animals. Even so, evaluations of this substance added to boar semen are important as it appears as an alternative to improve the quality of the boar semen stored for an extended period.…”

“…Despite well‐established benefits of green coffee for the treatment of various diseases, its beneficial effect in the treatment of male infertility in preventing sperm DNA damage has not yet been elucidated (Namula et al, 2018). However, two laboratory studies showed that chlorogenic acid, as the main ingredient of green coffee, has a positive effect on improving boar sperm quality following the frozen–thawed process (Namula et al, 2018; Teles et al, 2016).…”

“…Recently, Teles et al (2016) concluded that the use of coffee husks as floor covering worsens the quality of semen. Meanwhile, the effect of this substrate as floor covering on behavior of boars is unknown.…”
