Epstein-Barr virus in oral hairy leukoplakia scrapes: identification by PCR

Abstract: Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) is a lesion associated with a compromised immune system, and its diagnosis is determined by the demonstration of the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in lesional tissue. The purpose of this article was to develop a simple technique to help the diagnosis of OHL, using PCR as an alternative technique to evidence EBV in scrapings. DNA samples were obtained by scraping the lateral border of the tongue of 38 adult patients: 29 HIV-positive patients (4 with clinical evidence of OHL; … Show more

“…This shows the persistent location of the virus with virus particles released at saliva. 16 EBV expression of LMP1 and integral membrane protein have been detected in OHL. LMP1 will alter cell function by inducing cellular gene expression and in epithelial cells by inducing EGFR expression.…”

“…Specific, sensitive, and new molecular epidemiological techniques have been developed to identify EBV genes, namely LMP1 gene-sequence variation patterns. 16 LMP1 is the main EBV oncoprotein, its expression is needed for EBV latent infection and B cell's transformation. 14 EBV infection in lymphocytes B generally occurs nonlytically and gives expression to membrane proteins and nuclear proteins.…”

“…Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) presents as white patches, which are observed normally on the lateral surfaces of the tongue (Komatsu et al, 2005). The presence of EBV is detected in the tissues and blood due to chronic immunosuppression like HIV infection (De Paschale and Clerici, 2012).…”
