Assessment of genetic diversity in the Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) based on ISSR genetic markers

Abstract: -Elaeagnus is a Eurasian tree with 77 species worldwide. In this study, ISSR markers were used to establish the level of genetic relationships and polymorphism across nine genotypes of Elaeagnus angustifolia collected from 9 different regions of West Azarbaijan province. The ISSR analysis with 11 anchored primers also generated 116 scorable loci, of which 92 were polymorphic (79.3%). The estimated Jaccard similarity coefficient ranged from 0.44 to 0.76 for the ISSR markers. Cluster analysis was carried out, ba… Show more

“…SSR and ISSR marker systems were combined in this study and showed that the high polymorphism rate (Tables 3 and 4) is consistent with the results from previous reports on olive genetic diversity based on different molecular markers (Gomes et al, 2009;Souza et al, 2012;Abdelhamid et al, 2013;Asadiar et al, 2013;Trujillo et al, 2014). These results were tested repeatedly in different laboratories and showed stable results.…”

“…22,23 In Azarbaijan province folk medicine, the fruit and flower preparations have been used for healing jaundice, asthma, flatulence, vomiting and nausea. 24 Phytochemical studies on different extracts from fruits and flowers of E. angustifolia indicated the presence of polysaccharides, flavonoids, coumarins, phenolcarboxylic acids, amino acids, saponins, carotenoids, vitamins, and tannins as secondary metabolites. 12,13,25 Besides mentioned secondary metabolites, this plant also contains volatile oils that may be useful as a source of nutrition or pharmaceutical compounds.…”
