Introduction: Exercise intolerance interposes daily life activities in chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD); hence, the evaluation of this functional limitation becomes fundamental. Objective: To compare the six-minute walk test (HR 6peak ) with the stair-climbing test (SCT) in patients with COPD. Methods: prospective analysis of twenty-one patients with COPD who were part of the -Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program -(PRP). Patients were evaluated from July to October, 2008 when they performed the HR 6peak and SCT, analyzing the physiological variables (HR, PSO2), and the modified Borg scale before and after each test. The distance was measured at the end of the tests. Results: Comparing the timing (early versus late) of physiological and subjective perception of exertion (RPE) from Borg, we can observe that all changes were statistically significant (p <0.001) tests. However, when the physiological changes were compared, the PSO2 obtained presented similar reduction (p = 0.912) in both tests, the HR increased significantly in SCT (p = 0.006) and on Borg RPE (p <0.001). Regarding the walking distance performed, the HR 6peak (p <0.001), allowed participants to advance to a distance significantly longer than the SCT. Conclusion: the tests expressed important physiological and subjective perception of effort (RPE) from Borg (p <0.001).

| This research aimed to evaluate the effects of verbal stimuli (VS) in the time of the Stair climbing Test (SCT) and in the cardiorespiratory variables on healthy adults. Thirty-one healthy adults performed two SCT (with VS and without VS). Before and after each test, vital signs and Borg Scale were evaluated. The times in SCT were compared using the Student's t-test for paired samples, and differences were compared according to the order of the testing using the Mann-Whitney Test. The vital signs and Borg Scale were compared by the Friedman Test or ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey Test. The variations of these variables were compared using the Student's t-test for independent samples or Mann-Whitney Test (p<0.05). The time in the SCT without VS was 23.48±8.28 seconds significantly greater than the test with VS that was 21.60±7.18 seconds (p<0.05). All the variables increased after the tests and the Borg Scale was the one that had more variation in SCT with VS, ranging 2.5±1.4 in the test without VS and 3.0±1.8 points in the test with VS (p<0.05). Verbal stimulation improves performance in TEsc and leads to greater sensation of effort.

Além disso, pretende-se verificar se há correlação e concordância dessas variáveis entre o TC6 e os demais testes. Materiais e métodos: Foram avaliados 11 pacientes com DPOC (71 8 anos, VEF 1 < 80% previsto) por meio dos testes. Resultados: Na análise intertestes, não se observaram diferenças significativas nos deltas da SpO 2 , dispneia (Δdispneia) e fadiga de MMII (ΔfadigaMMII). Constatou-se correlação significante, mas não concordância entre os menores valores da SpO 2 no TC6 com os menores valores da SpO 2 nos TC6Po, TD6 e TSL, sendo a média da diferença entre as médias com 1,96 desvio padrão: 0,8 3,5; -1,9 3,5 e -2,5 4,6, respectivamente; entre Δdispneia e ΔfadigaMMII no TC6 com Δdispneia e ΔfadigaMMII no TC6Po: 0,0 1,0 e 0,4 0,8, respectivamente; e do ΔfadigaMMII no TC6 com ΔfadigaMMII no TSL: 0,1 1,1. Conclusão: Os testes funcionais produziram respostas de oxigenação e perceptuais de esforço semelhantes em magnitude.
