Ressecção de schwannoma mediastinal por cirurgia torácica videoassistida

Abstract: Schwannomas are tumors that are typically benign. They are derived from Schwann cells (glial cells of the peripheral nervous system that serve to separate and isolate nerve cells from adjacent structures). The most common type of schwannoma is a benign tumor of cranial nerve VIII and is referred to as an acoustic neuroma. When extradural, such tumors usually present as masses that can invade adjacent structures, thereby becoming symptomatic, as in the case of intrathoracic schwannomas (typically found in the p… Show more

“…Videothoracoscopy for removal of posterior mediastinal tumours is the “gold standard”, as this technique provides important factors of surgery, namely, a shorter hospital stay and low postoperative pain. Postoperative complications such as pneumothorax and pneumonia are rare [ [13] , [14] , [15] ].…”

“…Patients become symptomatic when the tumor attains large size like in our patient. [ 5 ] These tumors can occur in intracranial sites, retroperitoneum, flexor surfaces of the limbs, and posterior spinal roots. High-resolution computed tomography is the investigation of choice.…”

“…A commonly preferred surgical access is videothoracoscopy (VT). Shortened hospital stay, lower demand for painkillers and decreased risk of pulmonary complications are the most often mentioned advantages of the minimally invasive technique [ 1 , 2 , 5 , 12 ]. In our material we used VT in 17 out of 22 patients.…”
