SPATIAL AND TEMPORALVARIATION OF DISSOLVED INORGANIC NUTRIENTS, AND CHLOROPHYLL-α IN a TROPICAL ESTUARY IN NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL: DYNAMICS OF NUTRIENT REMOVAL

Abstract: Monthly sampling campaigns were carried out between February 2010 and January 2011 to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of nutrients (ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved organic nitrogen, phosphate, dissolved organic phosphorus and silicate) and chlorophyll-a along a salinity gradient in the tropical Cachoeira River estuary, subject to the untreated effluents of a sewage treatment plant (STP). During the study period the lowest and highest river discharge occurred in February and April 2010, res… Show more

“…Based on that, the seasonal rainfall in tropical areas produce fluctuations in salinity, nutrient concentrations, turbidity and biological productivity (SANTIAGO et al, 2010) and the ammonium was the main inorganic form of DIN in the Bacanga River Estuary, corroborating with the data of MOSER et al (2005); PAMPLONA et al (2013) and SILVA et al (2015).…”

“…However, it does not happen spatially, once the algal bloom was potentiated by high concentrations of nutrients. The entry of nutrients can occur naturally through runoff, or through the discharge of domestic sewage (THOMAS et al, 2005;PAERL et al, 2010;SOUZA et al, 2014), and when dominants (ammonium and phosphorus) the N:P ratio is less than the Redfield ratio 16:1 (COELHO et al, 2015;SILVA et al, 2015).…”

“…Tropical estuarine environments such as bays, coastal lagoons and mangroves are firmly subject to expansion and urban growth (Silva et al, 2015). These ecosystems work as corridors for the transport of dissolved or suspended continental matters (nutrients and organic matter) towards the sea.…”
