New design chart for basic wind speeds in Brazil

Abstract: The design charts for basic wind speeds currently in use in Brazil [1] were created in 1977, based on wind speed records from 1950 to 1974. The database covered up to 25 years of wind records obtained in 49 weather stations, totaling 919 station×years of data. Since 1974, additional 37 years of wind records became available, but have not been incorporated in the design code. Hence, the updated wind charts proposed in this paper are long overdue. In this paper, 62 years of wind records in Brazil are gathered in… Show more

“…The maximum wind pressure acting on a structure, in 50 years, is denoted W50 in this paper. It is a random variable with Gumbel distribution, as argued in Beck and Correa (2013). In a similar way, the maximum live load on a structure, in a period of 50 years, is a random variable, denoted L 50 in this paper.…”

“…Beck and Souza Jr. (2010) investigated the statistics of wind loads in Brazil. Beck and Correa (2013) proposed the updating of design winds of NBR 6123:1988, which are long outdated. There is current work being done with respect to updating NBR 6123, but new design charts are not yet ready.…”

“…Since then, new wind speed records have been available and more stations have been built. It is worth mentioning that Santos (1989), Bautista (2002), Almeida (2010) and Beck & Corrêa (2013) presented new wind speeds studies and their charts are considerably different than the chart in the Brazilian standard NBR 6123 (ABNT, 1988).…”

“…In this paper, however, the main focus is on the loading side, more specifically: wind load. Wind velocity and, hence wind load on structures, are stochastic processes, which fluctuate both in time and space (Beck & Corrêa, 2013). Generally, structural design codes consider the wind velocity randomness by defining a specific wind velocity value that is associated to a load factor; these values are determined based on a statistical study of the historical database of wind velocities.…”
