On the effect of the near field records on the steel braced frames equipped with energy dissipating devices

Abstract: The behavior of braced steel frame structures is of special importance due to its extensive use. Also the application of active and semi-active control systems, regarding to their benefits in obtaining better seismic performance has increased significantly. The majority of the works on steel structures and steel connections has been done under far field records, and the behavior of steel frame structures equipped with yielding dampers under these circumstances has not yet been fully analyzed. The main purpose … Show more

“…Hence, it is desired to develop a simplified method herein to obtain the displacement demand to facilitate displacement-based seismic design. Equal displacement rule is considered to be an efficient and accurate mechanism to estimate the displacement demand for elastoplastic SDOF systems (Clough and Penzien, 2003;Bayat and Abdollahzadeh, 2011). For elastoplastic SDOF structure, which generally satisfies equal displacement rule, the inelastic displacement demand obtained by Nonlinear Time History Analysis (NTHA) is very close to the elastic displacement demand obtained by Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA).…”

“…Looking ahead for future trends in seismic design of steel structures, one cannot disregard the fact that several technically excellent solutions, based on sound research, ended up not having a practical acceptance as broad as once thought, primarily due to economic efficiency, as well as site and structural specificity. That might have been the case of structural isolation and supplementary damping [6,28,29].…”

“…The study by Bayat & Abdollahzadeh (2011) investigates the behaviour of structures with and without energy dissipating devices. The study discusses energy concepts under near field records, taking three cases for the analysis, including structures with five, ten and fifteen story concentric braced frames.…”
