Phylogeography and conservation genetics of the Amazonian freshwater stingray Paratrygon aiereba Müller & Henle, 1841 (Chondrichthyes: Potamotrygonidae)

Abstract: The family Potamotrygonidae is monophyletic comprising three genera: Paratrygon Duméril, Potamotrygon Garman and Plesiotrygon Rosa, Castello & Thorson. The distribution of most species in this family is restricted to a single basin or fluvial system. Only Potamotrygon motoro, Potamotrygon orbignyi and Paratrygon aiereba are found in more than one river basin. In this study we investigate genetic structuring of Paratrygon aiereba, from five rivers of the Amazon region: Negro, Solimões-Amazon-Estuary system, Tap… Show more

“…However, a thorough examination of intraspecific rates of evolution of the different mtDNA regions in sharks and rays has not yet been carried out, and there may be alternative regions exhibiting useful polymorphisms that could be exploited for population genetic analysis. Interestingly, the highest single gene mitochondrial nucleotide diversity reported in any elasmobranch species so far was in the Dark Shyshark Haploblepharus pictus using the COXI gene [ 19 ] followed by the Discus Ray Paratrygon aiereba using the ND6 gene [ 20 ]. Also, Naylor et al [ 21 ] collected 4,283 ND2 sequences and looked at intraspecific divergences in 595 different elasmobranch species.…”

“…It aims at depicting the patterns of geographic dispersal of taxa and understanding the mechanisms responsible for their varied distribution (Frederico, Farias, Araújo, CharvetAlmeida, & Alves-Gomes, 2012). The deepest levels of phylogeographical partitioning are linked with geological or pre-quaternary climatic changes and isolation by distance.…”

“…Dentre os três gêneros de raias fluviais, os estudos de caracterização da peçonha foram realizados com raias dos gêneros Potamotrygon e Plesiotrygon. Ainda não foram identificados trabalhos que analisem bioquimicamente as toxinas da peçonha de raias do gênero Paratrygon, apesar de apresentarem ampla distribuição geográfica e abundância no rio Tocantins (Frederico et al, 2012;Lameiras et al, 2014).…”
