The ichthyofauna of upper rio Capivari: defining conservation strategies based on the composition and distribution of fish species

Abstract: Although the rio Capivari basin is recognized as an area of great importance for the ichthyofauna, it lacks virtually every basic requirement for the definition of appropriate conservation strategies, since not even its species composition is known. The objective of this work is to determine the composition and distribution of fish species in the upper rio Capivari basin, relating them to the local physical features, and to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed conservations units, delimited based on areas of… Show more

“…The larvae were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level according to the method of Nakatani et al (2001) and based on published lists of species from the upper rio Grande (Cemig & Cetec, 2000;Pompeu et al, 2009). Organisms that could not be identified because of their developmental stages or structural damage were classified as "non-identified.…”

“…In the upper Paraná River basin, most migratory species belong to the orders Characiformes and Siluriformes, especially the families Characidae, Anostomidae and Pimelodidae (Agostinho et al, 2003). Based on the available species lists for the upper Rio Grande basin, nine important migratory species in this region are distributed among these three families (Cemig & Cetec, 2000;Pompeu et al, 2009). Migratory species in the family Characidae include Brycon orbignyanus, Brycon nattereri, Salminus brasiliensis, Salminus hilarii and Piaractus mesopotamicus.…”

“…Na bacia do rio Grande já foram registradas aproximadamente 105 espécies de peixes, muitas delas são consideradas raras ou endêmicas (PoMPeu et al, 2009). Na região do alto rio Grande, existem alguns barramentos como as usinas hidrelétricas de Funil e Itutinga que estão separadas por um trecho remanescente lótico de aproximadamente 20 km de extensão.…”

“…1), and much of the river's flow is used to generate hydropower. The river flows through cerrado (savanna) vegetation where average annual temperature is 19-21 xC and the climate is semihumid, with 4-5 months of drought, a 6-month rainy season, and mean annual rainfall of 1200-1500 mm (Pompeu et al, 2009).…”
