Population structure, growth and fishery yield of Leporinus acutidens (Valenciennes, 1837) (Teleostei: Anostomidae) in Yacyretá Reservoir (Argentina)

Abstract: The population structure and dynamics of Leporinus acutidens (Valenciennes, 1837), upstream from Yacyretá Dam (Upper Paraná River, Argentina) were analyzed for their relation to age, condition factor, growth, mortality and fishery yield. The pre- (1990-94) and post- (1995-98) filling phases of the reservoir were compared with regard to age structure, condition factor, and the length/weight relationship of fish. Fish sampling was carried out at four sampling sites following a longitudinal gradient along the riv… Show more

“…Our study shows the high frequency of juveniles in Corumbá Reservoir, just after its impoundment, and indicates that this species exploits its abundant but temporary resources (food and shelter) to complete its development. A similar result is reported for Leporinus species in Yacyretá (Araya et al, 2005(Araya et al, , 2008. The high mortality of the dourado in the first and second year could be because open areas with low turbidity can increase predation on eggs and larvae.…”

“…This is related to the high precipitation, air and water temperatures and photoperiod, in addition to coinciding with the spawning period (Barbieri et al, 2000). However, Leporinus acutidens studies carried in middle Paraná River stretches report growth mark formation during autumn/winter before the damming and during spring after it (Araya et al, 2008).…”

“…Then, it is normal that the growth is in favour of weight during the lower water season (b>3) and in favour of the length during the flood (b<3). Similar Araya et al (2008). The authors explained that, during the spring, the reduction of the availability of small fishes (preys) can be related to low growth.…”
