Ambicoloration and morphological aberration in the sole Achirus declivis (Pleuronectiformes: Achiridae) and two other cases of color abnormalities in achirid soles from southeastern Brazil

Abstract: Three cases of color abnormalities and one of morphological aberration in flatfishes of the genus Achirus are described from the Piraquê-Açú River estuary, Espírito Santo, Brazil. One specimen of A. declivis has 75% of the blind side with coloration like that of the ocular side. Another specimen of the same species is strongly hypomelanistic. A third specimen has incomplete eye rotation and a hooked dorsal fin. An ambicolored A. lineatus is also described.Três casos de anormalidades pigmentares e um caso de ma… Show more

“…Color abnormalities have been reported for a variety of flatfish species (e.g. Cunningham, 1907;Hussakof, 1914;Norman, 1934;Gudger, 1936;Gudger and Firth, 1936;De Veen, 1969;Houde, 1971;Fujita, 1980;Gartner, 1986;Chaves et al, 2002;Quigley, 2003;Carnikian et al, 2006;Diaz de Astarloa et al, 2006;Macieira et al, 2006;Da Silva Junior et al, 2007;Akyol and Şen 2012).…”

“…These flatfishes are called 'hooked' and sometimes it can also cause abnormal pigmentation (Norman, 1934). There were a few records for head anomalies in flatfishes (Gudger and Firth, 1936;Fujita, 1980;Gartner, 1986;Diaz de Astarloa et al, 2006;Macieira et al, 2006).…”

“…Pigment anomalies of some other flatfish species are well documented and have been described to affect wild populations (De Veen 1969, Gartner 1986, Macieira et al 2006 as well as farmed fish (Ottesen & Strand 1996, Venizelos & Benetti 1999, Bolker & Hill 2000, Copeman & Parrish 2002, Bolker et al 2005, Yamanome et al 2005, Noguera et al 2013. However, hyperpigmentation observed in dab may be a distinct phenomenon and differs from other types recorded because of its high prevalence and cellular and tissue characteristics (Noguera et al 2013).…”

“…Different types of abnormalities including those of the color were documented on several species of fishes since the works of Dawson (1964;1966;1971) (Macieira et al, 2006;Simon et al, 2009). Malpigmentation in fishes generally occurs as either a deficiency (albinism or hypomelanosis) or an excess (melanism or hypermelanosis) of pigmentation (Simon et al, 2009;.…”
