Evidence of habitat fragmentation affecting fish movement between the Patos and Mirim coastal lagoons in southern Brazil

Abstract: The communication between the Patos and Mirim lagoon systems occurs via a natural channel called São Gonçalo. In 1977, a dam was built in this channel to prevent entrance of saline waters from Patos Lagoon estuary into the Mirim Lagoon. Our results showed an abrupt discontinuity in salinity and fish species distribution along the study sites. Sites below the dam showed salinity values higher than zero, whereas sites above had zero salinity values across all sampling periods. Marine and estuarine fishes (e.g., … Show more

“…In addition, this approach confirms the physiological and ionoregulatory mechanisms reported for fish found in estuarine regions (Elliott & Dewailly, 1995;Prodócimo & Freire, 2001;Garcia et al, 2003aGarcia et al, , 2003bGarcia et al, , 2004Burns et al, 2006;Freire & Prodócimo, 2007;Martinho et al, 2007;Da Rocha et al, 2009). Our findings also confirm results from earlier studies regarding the environments used by these fish species for feeding, reproduction and nursery grounds (Chao et al, 1985;Vieira & Castello, 1996;Garcia et al, 2003aGarcia et al, , 2003bGarcia et al, , 2004Burns et al, 2006).…”

“…This natural channel is 75 km long, 200-500 m wide, 6 m deep, and is obstructed by the São Gonçalo dam to prevent salt water intrusion into the Mirim Lagoon during the dry season (Burns et al, 2006;Da Rocha et al, 2009).…”

“…This species has been caught in the Mirim Lagoon (Fig. 1), despite more than 30 years of isolation from estuarine waters (Burns et al, 2006). The Patos-Mirim Lagoon complex is an oligohaline-freshwater ecosystem and its southern area experiences the high variability of salinity characteristic of estuarine waters (Seeliger, 2001).…”
