Development of laparoscopic skills in Medical students naive to surgical training

Abstract: Objective To assess the acquisition of basic laparoscopic skills of Medical students trained on a surgical simulator. Methods First- and second-year Medical students participated on a laparoscopic training program on simulators. None of the students had previous classes of surgical technique, exposure to surgical practice nor training prior to the enrollment in to the study. Students´ time were collected before and after the 150-minute training. Skill acquisition was measured comparing time and scores of studen… Show more

“…Four basic decision-making approaches for deciding whether a simulation model is valid have been described in recent literature: 22 ( We have used the first two methods for the purposes of our research: combined verification by the development team 24 There may be several reasons that affect skill acquisition such as 2D versus 3D visual fields, training time, training models, level of supervision, as well as possible innate ability of the surgical trainee. 24 Identifying factors that ease or impede skills acquisition is key to improving the learning curve. 24 Our study addresses one such factor, i.e.…”

“…The training aims to improve and transfer the skills acquired from the training lab to the operating room 8 . The programme consists of laparoscopic training modules in simulators covering pre, intra and postoperative knowledge and basic (object transfer, cut patterns, loop ligatures, knots and extracorporeal sutures) and advanced laparoscopic procedures (intracorporeal knots and sutures), with the measurement of cognitive and technical skills.…”

“…In the scope of graduation, the teaching of videosurgery is already a reality and has been growing along with the use of technology with simulators, since the student has to be prepared for the changes of the current and future scenario 7 , 8 .…”
