Epidemiology and risk factors of candidemia due to Candida parapsilosis in an intensive care unit

Abstract: We analyzed the clinical features and risk factors of candidemia due to C. parapsilosis (n=104) in the intensive care unit of a tertiary hospital over six years. This was a monocentric, retrospective study of candidemia, conducted from January 2013 to March 2019. Epidemiological characteristics, clinical features, invasive procedures, laboratory data and outcomes of 267 patients with candidemia were analyzed to determine risk factors of candidemia due to C. parapsilosis. … Show more

“…Continuous surveillance plays a crucial role in controlling infections due to intrinsic antifungal-resistant species such as C. glabrata, which has a decreased susceptibility to azoles and resistance to amphotericin B. Candida glabrata candidemia is more common among the elderly and cancer patients. The ability of C. parapsilosis complex to colonize human skin is a commonly reported cause of catheter-related infections (11,12). Our study indicated that bloodstream infections due to C. albicans were common.…”

“…Candidaalbicans was the most prevalent species, followed by C. parapsilosis among candidemia patients, according to many reports in the literature (6,9). On the contrary, C. parapsilosis has been reported as the most commonly isolated Candida strain in other studies (10,11).…”

“…There are frequent reports on increased resistance by Candida species, such as fluconazole-resistant C. parapsilosis [5] and echinocandin-resistant C. glabrata [12]. In addition, there is increasing involvement of emerging species with intrinsic resistance profiles, such as C. krusei with resistance to fluconazole and C. auris, which is multiresististant [3,95].…”

“…It is estimated that invasive fungal infections (IFIs) affect the health of more than one billion people worldwide, causing the deaths of approximately 1.5 million every year [1,2]. These high rates of IFIs are related to the increased survival of patients in immunocompromised conditions, such as those with HIV and cancer, which predispose them to opportunistic infections caused by fungi [3][4][5].…”
