Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are primarily maintained in nature in transmission cycles between hematophagous arthropods and vertebrate hosts, but an increasing number of arboviruses have been isolated from or indirectly detected in the urogenital tract and sexual secretions of their vertebrate hosts, indicating that further investigation on the possibility of sexual transmission of these viruses is warranted. The most widely recognized sexually-transmitted arbovirus is Zika virus but other arboviruses, including Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus and dengue virus, might also be transmitted, albeit occasionally, by this route. This review summarizes our current understanding on the ability of arboviruses to be sexually transmitted. We discuss the sexual transmission of arboviruses between humans and between vertebrate animals, but not arthropod vectors. Every taxonomic group known to contain arboviruses (Asfarviridae, Bunyavirales, Flaviviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Reoviridae, Rhabdoviridae and Togaviridae) is covered.

Introdução: A Dengue, Chikungunya e Zika são importantes problemas de saúde pública. Tem-se observado que o número de pessoas infectadas é relevante a cada ano. Objetivos: Desta forma, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar o nível de conhecimento de usuários de Unidades de Saúde da Família sobre as arboviroses transmitidas pelo vetor Aedes aegypti , quanto ao diagnóstico, manifestações clínicas, possíveis complicações e tratamento. Além disso, objetiva-se propor medidas quem aumentem o acesso a esse tipo de conhecimento , Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo do tipo transversal, desenvolvido por meio de um questionário autoaplicável. O processamento, armazenamento e análise dos dados foram realizados através do programa estatístico SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), versão 21.0. Empregou-se o teste qui-quadrado de Pearson para identificar possíveis associações entre o gênero, escolaridade e o nível de conhecimento sobre as três arboviroses. A pesquisa foi executada em Unidades de Saúde da Família (USF) dos bairros XXXXX e XXXXX, os quais apresentavam índices preocupantes de infestação predial do Aedes aegypti da cidade de XXXXX. Resultados e discussão: Participaram do estudo 537 usuários escolhidos aleatoriamente, pôde-se detectar insuficiência no acesso às informações ao comprovar que um bom número de participantes (n = 206; 58,4%) não souberam afirmar corretamente que, dentre as três arboviroses a que provocava dores mais fortes nas articulações era a Chikungunya. Além disso, boa parte da amostra, desconhece que de acordo com os casos clínicos relatados em nível mundial até os dias atuais, a microcefalia ocorre apenas na Zika (n = 403; 43,0%), que a Chikungunya é caracterizada por início súbito de febre alta e dor articular intensa e incapacitante (n = 241; 44,9%) e que é a Dengue que desencadeia febres mais altas (n = 184; 34,3%). No presente estudo, verificou-se também associação significativa (p = 0,038) entre gênero e conhecimento sobre o tratamento da Chikungunya e Zika. Além disso, pessoas com escolaridade mais elevada demonstraram maior domínio de conhecimento acerca do modo de contágio, sintomatologia, complicações e tratamento da zika, dengue e chikungunya e foi constatada associação significativa entre UBS e conhecimento de que a microcefalia ocorre na zika ( p = 0,002). Conclusão: A partir desses resultados, observou-se um déficit de conhecimento em parte da população estudada, principalmente nos usuários com baixa escolaridade, reforçando a importância do investimento em educação em saúde, através de intervenções sob a forma de programas de transmissão de conhecimento sobre o diagnóstico diferencial das três arboviroses.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy can result in severe birth defects, such as microcephaly, as well as a range of other related health complications. Heparin, a clinical-grade anticoagulant, is shown to protect neural progenitor cells from death following ZIKV infection. Although heparin can be safely used during pregnancy, it retains off-target anticoagulant effects if directly employed against ZIKV infection. In this study, we investigated the effects of chemically modified heparin derivatives with reduced anticoagulant activities. These derivatives were used as experimental probes to explore the structure–activity relationships. Precursor fractions of porcine heparin, obtained during the manufacture of conventional pharmaceutical heparin with decreased anticoagulant activities, were also explored. Interestingly, these modified heparin derivatives and precursor fractions not only prevented cell death but also inhibited the ZIKV replication of infected neural progenitor cells grown as neurospheres. These effects were observed regardless of the specific sulfation position or overall charge. Furthermore, the combination of heparin with Sofosbuvir, an antiviral licensed for the treatment of hepatitis C (HCV) that also belongs to the same Flaviviridae family as ZIKV, showed a synergistic effect. This suggested that a combination therapy approach involving heparin precursors and Sofosbuvir could be a potential strategy for the prevention or treatment of ZIKV infections.
