Increased serum gastrin in patients with different clinical forms of Chagas disease coinfected with Helicobacter pylori

Abstract: Trypanosoma cruzi and Helicobacter pylori (HP) are pathogens that cause chronic diseases and have been associated with hypergastrinemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the fasting gastrin levels in patients with different clinical forms of Chagas disease (CD), coinfected or not by HP. The enrolled individuals were outpatients attending at the university hospital. HP infection was assessed by serology and 13 C-urea breath test. Fasting serum gastrin concentration was measured by chemiluminescence assay. … Show more

“…The changes of serum G17 level can reflect the state of gastric mucosal lesions, so it can serve as a screening index for gastric cancer and precancerous diseases 9 . In our study, as with other researches, G17 level was not different in different sex, age and BMI 10 . However, several previous studies have reported that G17 level is remarkably higher in females than in males, and speculated that the results may be related to hormonal changes that occur during menopause 11 .…”

“…This difference may be related to the changes in hormones that occur in women during menopause. Some previous studies have reported differences in serum G‐17 levels between males and females, while some others have reported no difference 12‐14 . G‐17 is an unstable indicator which is affected by many factors.…”

“…[ 27 ] The relation between eradication failure of H. pylori and foods, caffeinated beverages as coffee/tea and smoking that lowering the pH of the stomach, is mentioning because the low pH of the stomach promotes the growth of H. pylori pathogen and decreasing efficacy of antibiotics as well. “…The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and low bactericidal concentrations of most antibiotics used for eradication of H. pylori are pH-dependent of the stomach, at pH values <7.4 the MIC increases. [ 20 21 ] Thus, we take into consideration the effect of foods that trigger acid reflux on the efficacy of dexlansoprazole and subsequently the efficacy of levofloxacin and amoxicillin in H. pylori eradication.…”
