Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato GENOTYPES IN DOMESTIC LIVESTOCK AND HUMANS IN GOLESTAN PROVINCE, IRAN

Abstract: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a globally parasitic zoonosis caused by larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus. This study investigated E. granulosus genotypes isolated from livestock and humans in the Golestan province, northern Iran, southeast of the Caspian sea, using partial sequencing data of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and NADH dehydrogenase 1 (nad1) mitochondrial genes. Seventy E. granulosus isolates were collected from animals in slaughterhouses: 18 isolates from sheep, 40 from cattle, ni… Show more

“…Echinococcus felidis was recovered as a sister taxon to G1-G3 genotypes in a distinct clade with maximum statistical support (pp = 1.00); this is in concordance with the studies of Lavikainen et al [65], Hüttner et al [66], Saarma et al [7] and previous studies in Iran [15,64]. Two E. granulosus haplotypes from the present study (E.gkh63 and E.gkh75) identified as the G1 genotype were grouped with reference G1 genotype within the cluster with G1-G3 genotypes with maximum statistical support (pp = 1.00).…”

“…Molecular analyses of echinococcosis in Iran have been performed mostly on CE in humans and domestic animals [15,19,20,22] and only to a limited extent on adult worms in the definitive hosts [24][25][26][27]. This difference mostly reflects difficulties related to field studies of definitive hosts, such as obtaining stray dogs and wild canids, contamination with viral infections (i.e.…”

“…In some studies, conducted in different geographical areas of Iran, the G1 strain of E. granulosus was reported as the dominance genotype in intermediate hosts including cattle, sheep, human and camels (37,38). In one study conducted in Golestan province, northern Iran, G1 and G3 strains have been reported in 78.3% and 15% of CE cases respectively (39). The G1 strain also reported from the wild boar in Iran (14).…”

“…Among EG s.s., one haplotype (HL1) was highly predominant in both humans and animals cysts (71.6 %) (Zait et al). Sharbatkhori et al (2016), of the Infectious Diseases Research Center, Golestan University of Medical Sciences, Gorgan, Iran and other related centers, studied 74 hydatid cysts isolated from livestock (18 from sheep, 40 from cattle, 9 from camels, 2 from buffaloes and 1 from a goat) and humans (4 isolates) in the Golestan province, northern Iran, southeast of the Caspian sea, using partial sequencing data of COI and NADH dehydrogenase 1 mitochondrial genes. Then, isolates were analysed by PCR amplification and sequencing.…”
